Monterey County NOW reporter Sara Rubin reports that Catherine Breed reached Pacific Grove on Tuesday, August 25, after swimming 455 miles from the Oregon border. The Pacific Grove stop marks the halfway point of Breed's planned 900-mile, roughly four-month staged swim along the California coast. More than 100 people attended her talk at Hopkins Marine Station.

Rubin reports that Breed arrived about 10 days ahead of schedule after favorable currents and her own pace. Breed said she typically covers about 10 miles in four hours when conditions cooperate and takes a rest day every seven to 10 days. She planned several rest days in Monterey before heading south along Big Sur, which she expects to be one of the expedition's two most difficult stretches.

The schedule is weather-dependent. The team told Rubin it faces a forecast headwind near the upper limit it considers workable and no safe harbor for its support sailboat until San Simeon. Breed had already ended Tuesday's swim early because of heavy fog. Those operational details describe the expedition's planning; they are not a public marine advisory.
