The National Weather Service issued a beach-hazards statement at 9:31 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time Friday, October 16, covering Pacific Coast beaches including southern Monterey Bay and the Big Sur coast.

The statement runs from 3 a.m. Saturday, October 17, through 9 p.m. Sunday, October 18. NWS warns of an increased risk of sneaker waves and strong rip currents, with breaking waves of 7 to 12 feet.

For Pacific Grove residents and visitors planning trips to the coast, the warning means extra caution at beaches, shoreline rocks and other waterside infrastructure. NWS says waves can sweep across the shore without warning and pull people into the sea.

The agency advises staying off jetties, piers and rocks, remaining out of the water to avoid hazardous surf, and keeping watch on the ocean.
