What readers need to know
CAL FIRE raised the Timber Fire estimate to 7,591 acres in an update posted August 22 at 5:54 a.m. That is 922 acres more than the 6,669-acre figure in Friday evening's update.
The new acreage notice did not restate containment. The previously reported 29% therefore remains a Friday-evening measurement, not a confirmed current percentage, and MyPG.news is not carrying it forward on the current story.
The prior evening update said firefighters had strengthened containment lines along the coastal side while the eastern edge remained active around the Pine Ridge Trail system. It also said agencies were assessing loose and unstable rocks above Highway 1.
Highway 1 remains closed through the fire area. Pacific Grove residents and visitors planning Big Sur travel should check the linked Caltrans route report immediately before leaving and should not attempt to pass road barriers.
