A hard closure of Highway 1 is scheduled to begin Thursday, August 27 at 1 p.m. between mile marker 50.1, about one mile south of Old Coast Road, and mile marker 42.6, about one-half mile south of Deetjen's Big Sur Inn. Monterey County says the closure is needed for planned strategic fire operations near Highway 1 and Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. The reopening time is unknown, and Caltrans will inspect and clear potential hazards before traffic resumes.

As of 6:40 p.m. Wednesday, Caltrans still listed Highway 1 open through the fire area. Its route report showed only the separate continuous one-way construction control at Rocky Creek Bridge through 6 a.m. August 31. Travelers should not treat Wednesday evening's open status as evidence the Thursday closure was canceled.

CAL FIRE updated the Timber Fire to 18,944 acres and 21% containment at 6:39 p.m. Wednesday. Compared with the agency values MyPG.news verified earlier Wednesday, that is 1,127 additional acres and a two-percentage-point decrease in the official containment estimate. The agency has not attributed that numerical revision to a specific cause, so MyPG.news is not inferring one.

The Monterey County Sheriff's Office says mandatory evacuation upgrades, warnings and shelter-in-place directives will also take effect Thursday at 1 p.m. for areas affected by the planned operation. Readers in or traveling through Big Sur should use the county's live incident map for their exact zone; no Pacific Grove evacuation is listed. The four previously reported Big Sur state-park closures remain in effect, while Asilomar State Beach is not on that closure list.
